Summer Pests: Mosquitos

Summertime is finally upon us which means spending more time outdoors with family and friends. Unfortunately, many different types of pests rear their ugly heads around this season. Combined with the heat and humidity that summer tends to bring, it isn’t the most perfect combination when pests come into the mix.

You are trying to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with friends and family, but there stands to be one particular pest who is notorious for ruining outings with their bites and “zzzing” sound. Yes, we are talking about mosquitos. These blood-sucking pests tend to ruin any late-night and daytime outdoor activities, which is awful since we tend to spend most of our time outside in the summer. Unfortunately, mosquitos are just lying in wait to ruin those activities

Information About Mosquitos

Mosquitos tend to be among the most widespread pests in the world. They tend to drink blood from animals and humans, which is how they are vectors of many different and deadly pathogens. Some of the diseases they are responsible for transmitting are Malaria, Yellow Fever, and West Nile Virus.

Malaria

Malaria is one of the most dangerous diseases that can be transmitted. Particularly in Africa, mosquitos are responsible for thousands of deaths per year. They kill more people than any other animal in the world, by a wide margin as well.

Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever is another pathogen mosquitos can transfer from person to person. Yellow fever isn’t as deadly as Malaria, but it still poses a danger, especially in the advanced stages. In the initial onset, the virus doesn’t pose an immediate danger. Many symptoms are chills, aches, and pains that are similar to a fever. Many people tend to recover from it shortly after the symptoms appear. Unfortunately, some people might reach the more advanced stages including kidney damage, which can be fatal to humans.

West Nile Virus

The West Nile Virus is a virus that causes West Nile fever. Most people have little to no symptoms when they contract West Nile fever. Some people will develop a fever which comes with the symptoms that a fever typically brings. There are cases though, once the West Nile fever reaches the nervous system, where it becomes significantly more dangerous. It can cause encephalitis and meningitis which are both fatal if left untreated or if they have reached later stages.

Along with the diseases they can bring, here are some quick and helpful facts about mosquitos to help you better understand them:

  • Female mosquitoes’ mouthparts form a long piercing-sucking proboscis. Males differ from females because they have feathery antennae and mouthparts not suitable for piercing skin.
  • A mosquito’s main food sources are nectar and any other sugars. The female mosquitoes will begin seeking a blood meal before they can lay their eggs. That is where they start biting people and animals.
  • Mosquitos have a complete lifecycle from egg, larvae, pupae to adult. Adult female mosquitos first lay their eggs in water. Then, the eggs become larvae and live in the water until they pupate. Once they’re in the pupae stage, the adult form of the mosquito will emerge.
  • The Mosquito life cycle can be completed in about 1 week, which is how they can infest a home pretty quickly.

Mosquitos are harbingers of many diseases and can become very deadly in large groups. This is why you need to look into getting your home and property protected. With the right service and protection, you may be able to enjoy your summertime without worrying about mosquitos.

Meers Mosquito Management and Fortress Max

Here at Meers Pest Solutions, our mosquito treatment is called Mosquito Management and Fortress Max. We commonly use this treatment for yards and lawns. For example, if a customer calls us requesting a treatment, we will go through the following:

  1. The pest technician will visit your home and inspect the infested area that the customer is looking to get treated. This inspection will be thorough to ensure that the problem is treated to the best of our ability.
  2. Once the inspection is complete, our technician will get with the customer to set up an appropriate date and time for the treatment to begin.
  3. After that, the pest technician will be at the customer’s home on the agreed date and time and begin the treatment. They will treat the area around the client’s home and yard to create a mosquito barrier.
  4. After treatment is finished, it should be effective for up to 3 weeks. For more severe infestations during peak mosquito seasons, treatment will be reapplied every 14 days.

Our mosquito treatment is not only restricted to traditional homes and yards. It is also effective in treating places like a wedding or sports games among many other events.
