Squirrel Pest Control Management

Squirrels are a common type of wildlife in many parts of the world. While they may appear rather friendly and adorable, they are still wildlife. That is why people have to be cautious when around squirrels. During the fall and winter is when they can become quite the nuisance as they start seeking shelter in our homes, which can present quite the problem. This is where it helps to be educated on squirrels and their habits.

3 Common Types of Squirrels

There are many different types of squirrels all over the world. In the United States, there are 3 common ones that we always see.

Eastern Gray Squirrel

The eastern gray squirrel is a medium-sized squirrel that is known for its noticeably gray fur. Its underside tends to have a lighter color and they have a bushy tail. They mostly hang around in the trees that they make their homes in.

Eastern Fox Squirrel

The eastern fox squirrel is a large-sized squirrel with a rusty yellowish fur coat. They are among the bigger squirrels in terms of size and are frequently seen roaming the ground. You may see some when walking around parks and other areas. Though they appear to spend a lot of time on the ground, they also frequent trees as well.

Thirteen Lined Ground Squirrel

Another common type of squirrel is the 13-lined ground squirrel. It is named for the 13 lines of brownish and white stripes on its back and sides. They have whitish spots on their backs as well. They are called ground squirrels since they make their homes in burrows underground.

These are 3 common types of squirrels that you may have seen at one point or another when walking around outside.

Squirrels Diets & Habits

Most squirrels seem to have similar diets and habits. Squirrels are omnivores as their diets consist of nuts, seeds, fruits, insects, and some small animals. This is in sharp contrast to what many people believe make up most of their diets, which is nuts. This diet helps ensure that they have a food source available all throughout the year.

During the colder months, squirrels will resort to burying their food to store it just in case food becomes more scarce. To do this, squirrels will rub their food on their face to familiarize themselves with the scent so that they have a greater chance of finding it once they bury it. They will bury their food in any spot they choose, even in your own garden if they so choose.

In terms of where they take shelter, squirrels build homes and nests within trees and some of them even underground. It depends on the species of squirrel, of course. For example, ground squirrels build burrows underground compared to other squirrels that build their homes within trees.

These squirrel habits can become a potential problem under certain circumstances.

Are Squirrels Considered a Pest?

Squirrels are seen more as a nuisance pest as their habits can lead to damage to a person’s property. One of the most common complaints when it comes to squirrels is due to the amount of noise they make. Squirrels can get pretty noisy, especially when they are communicating with each other. What’s worse is that when some squirrels get into homes, they start making noises around sunrise when they begin foraging for food.

Another reason squirrels are labeled as a nuisance pest is that when they find their way into a home, they tend to do some damage. They can chew on important wiring, leave fecal matter behind, and start gnawing on other parts of your home.

Before they even get inside of your home they start causing damage. For example, to get inside of your home, they chew a hole from the outside so that way they can get inside. This can mean damage to your siding and gutters.

Another common complaint against squirrels is their behavior. Of course, you usually try and avoid getting too close to them. There are some times though where your paths might cross with each other and the squirrel may attack. This may lead to you getting bitten which can be cause for concern.

Squirrel Removal

If you are experiencing a squirrel pest problem in your home and your property, there are pest control methods to remove them from there. One of the most effective methods of getting rid of squirrels is through trapping them.

Trapping squirrels is one of the most effective methods of getting rid of them especially once they are inside of your home. The pest technician will put these traps around entry points inside of your home that way the squirrels are more likely to get inside of them. Once trapped, the pest technician will take the squirrels inside of the traps and remove them from your home. This squirrel removal method will be done until all squirrels are no longer inside your home.

Another proactive method of keeping squirrels away from your home is by making sure all points of access for the squirrel are sealed off. A squirrel can’t get inside of your home if its entryway is covered. You can also try to make your property less appealing to squirrels by not having much in the way of food. This means ridding your property of any potential food source including insects and nuts.
