Pesky little things, gnats are. They show up when you least want them to, and they never seem to go away. If you’re having a gnat infestation, you’re not alone. Gnats are commonly found throughout the United States and can be found in many different environments. In this blog post, we will discuss where gnats are typically found, and how to get rid of them if they are bugging you!
Where do Gnats come from & why are there so many?
All it takes is one little gnat to find its way into your home and the next thing you know you have a gnat infestation on your hands. They are so small you wouldn’t even notice it laying its eggs in your trash can. You definitely wouldn’t see the lot of them growing into flying little buggers, in your decaying garbage or overripe apples you have on the counter. 2 weeks later you’ve got yourself a gnat infestation.
After they’ve fully matured, they are ready to breed and boy do they like to breed. Gnats most commonly thrive in humid areas with an ample amount of food. Thus, your trash can in your pantry or that bed of mulch from your garden you’ve been working on.
How to win the war on gnats
Step number one: The best defense is the offense. A gnat infestation can be prevented, it’s as simple as tossing out that smelly trash bag or washing your fruit before you store it away, or even stopping yourself from overwatering your plants (that prevents fungus; gnats love fungus.)
Step number two: When your offense is no good, have a good defense. Smaller gnat infestations can be remedied with some fun DIY projects. My personal favorite is mixing one part dish soap, with 2 parts apple cider vinegar (I always add some type of juice to attract them even more for good measure). If that doesn’t work for you, you could always redecorate with your favorite hanging sticky traps, or add a lovely new fragrance to your home called RAID or HOTSHOT.
